Consider my problem resolved and fodder for a FAQ. Philip Blundell was right.
cat file.ps > /dev/lp/0
caused a page to be printed. Consequently, it must lpd that is not
setup/working correctly; the parallel port would appear to function
properly, as evidenced by the success of the direct lower level
approach.
