Some ECP+EPP chips are buggy -- I think they can even cause system hangs.
We do a bug check so perhaps it's failing that.

It's only some of the fields, yes. (And yes, it will make them up
sometimes.) Perhaps we ought to change that, and store the actual Device
ID rather than just bits.
There also the deviceid program I wrote which can fetch a Device ID from
/dev/parport*.
