Are you sure there is a FAT filesystem on that disk? Try this:
# dd if=/dev/sda4 of=/tmp/fs bs=512 count=8
# file /tmp/fs
and see what it says.
If you get different results with your BIOS set to EPP, make a
/tmp/fs-epp so we can see what the difference is. It really shouldn't
make a difference..
