    tim,
    i have got the printer working by:

    recompiling with module support,
    compiling the modules and installing them,

    then run these commands:

    insmod parport.o
    insmod parport_pc.o io=0x378 irq=7
    insmod lp.o

    then it all works!

    would the proper place for these commands be rc.local?
    or is there a better way of doing what i am doing?
