    Tim,
            Thanks for your reply. I am trying to develop a user space driver for a data
    aquisition controller I have developed. I only used 'cat' to illustrate my
    problem. My open("/dev/parport0", O_RDWR) statement in my user space driver
    returns the same error 'no such device'.
