User-space has no business playing with them. ppdev doesn't offer a
PC-style port. It offers a defined set of operations on an IEEE 1284
port, which may be a PC-style port with hardware assistance, or with
no hardware assistance, or may be a different style of port altogether
(perhaps it's memory mapped, or perhaps the registers are just
    different [older sparcs]).

If someone thinks that they need to muck with the ECR to make their
driver work, then they are probably writing a parallel _port_ driver,
not a parallel port _device_ driver, and that belongs in the kernel.

    Tim.
