Yes, that hit the nail on the head. I updated just to 2.4.3 (from 2.4.2) and the problem went away! Never thought it would be so simple :)

What kernel version are you using? In early 2.4 versions (I think it was
about 2.4.2 or so) I had exactly the same problem (including the message)
with my EZ230. It was fixed in later versions, so I'd suggest upgrading if
you are using an old version. (2.4.8 has just come out.)
(You can get the entire source tree or patches to upgrade your current source
from:
(ftp or www).kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/v2.4/
