    Thank you for your response.

    I did

    - recompile my kernel with CONFIG_PARPORT_PC_FIFO turned on
      (in fact, I even upgraded to 2.4.14)
    - I first loaded the parport_pc module with the irq=auto dma=auto options
    - Then I added the lines "alias parport_lowlevel parport_pc" and "options
      parport_pc ..." as suggested in the documentation

    Still, the system only reports:

    parport0: PC-style at 0x378 (0x778) [PCSPP(,...)]
    parport1: PC-style at 0x278 [PCSPP(,...)]

    I really don't know how to debug (let alone, solve) this problem.
