Linux newbie here. I 'm trying to get the parallel port accessible for
VMwareWorkstation 3.0 under a host SuSe Linux 7.2 Professional OS,
Kernel 2.4.4. The standard Kernel was installed under YAST2 and not
modified.
Various items I've checked or tested:
CONFIG_PARPORT_PC=m
lsmod shows parport and parport_pc are loaded, however ppdev is
not present.
the lp module was removed
Modules.conf has the line alias parport_lowlevel parport_pc
VMware manual indicates that the ppdev module is required for parallel
port access
Various attempts to load ppdev have failed.
modprobe ppdev produces the error: init_module Input/Output error
modprobe ppdev io=0x378 irq=7
and
insmod ppdev io=0x378 irq=7
and
insmod ppdev io=XXXX irq=YYYY plus a number of combinations of
address and irqs
all fail with the comment: invalid parameter parm_io
They were "using /lib/modules/2.4.4-4GB/kernel/drivers/char/ppdev.o"
The message log indicates:
linux kernel: parport0: PC-style at 0x378 (0x778)
[PCSPP,TRISTATE,COMPAT,EPP,ECP]
linux kernel: parport0: irq 7 detected
linux kernal: ppdev: user-space parallel port driver
It is a Dell PIII computer with parallel port bios set to: 0378h
none,none
I have a HP Laserjet 6P connected to the port which works fine in both
text and graphics modes under the linux host.
The virtual guest OS under VMware works fine, except for the lack of
parallel port access. When the configuration editor is set for the
parallel port to start connected with /dev/parport0, a message appears
that it was " exited abnormally without removing a lock file
/.../.../.../win2000Pro.vmdk.WRITELOCK it will be removed
automatically" Upon clicking on the OK button the VMware screen
completely disappears. VMware works fine when started with the parallel
port not started connected.
How do I get the ppdev linux module installed?
Any suggestions appreciated.
Thanks
