Setting LP_CAREFUL might help a bit. I suspect the problem is that when the
printer is off, the port sits there with BUSY pulled inactive and the lp
driver foolishly assumes that the printer is always ready. Judging by a quick
look at the sources, in polling mode we don't care about ack pulses.
