Thanks, that did the trick. I was able to write big files from my
pentium machine.

Now I'm back to the 486 with the older parallel port. I tried to write a
big file here from this machine, and this time I get different errors.
I'm going to get a new EPP (ECP?) parallel port card tomorrow, and my
guess it that this is going to solve the problem (current port is off
a vlb ide card and is simply referred to as a "bi-directional port"--
detected by pt as "mode 2"). In the meantime, I'm pasting in some error
messages just for your reference in case they might be helpful in future
debugging or whatnot.
