So, I've finally got it to work ;)

It actually is repeatable, and it seems to appear whenever I try to
initialise the driver into any of the three first modes (0,1,2) and at the
same time setting the delay parameter to -1. The driver is functional in
mode 0 and 2.
Anyway, it's working now and hopefully this information will be of use to
you.
