I went out and bought the SIIG CyberParallel Port PCI card. I used
Grant's helpful tips to get it to work, and here are some results:

  Bus 0, device 17, function 0:
Parallel controller: Unknown vendor Unknown device (rev 0).
      Vendor id=131f. Device id=2020.
Medium devsel. Fast back-to-back capable. IRQ 11.
      I/O at 0xfcf0 [0xfcf1].
      I/O at 0xfcfc [0xfcfd].

pd: pd version 1.05, major 45, cluster 64, nice 0
pda: epat: port 0xfcf0, mode 0, ccr 0, test=(0,0,0)
pda: epat: port 0xfcf0, mode 1, ccr 0, test=(0,0,0)
pda: epat: port 0xfcf0, mode 2, ccr 2d, test=(255,255,510)
pda: epat: port 0xfcf0, mode 3, ccr ff, test=(255,255,510)
pda: epat: port 0xfcf0, mode 4, ccr ff, test=(255,255,510)
pda: epat: port 0xfcf0, mode 5, ccr ff, test=(255,255,510)
pda: epat 1.01, Shuttle EPAT chip c6 at 0xfcf0, mode 1 (5/3), delay 1

 pda: pda1

The first time I loaded pd, it went in as mode 2 (8-bit). I have not
gotten it to load mode 2 since. I tried to force it, and even tried "-1"
in the command line, but I couldn't get it back. So I am using mode1 only.

To test the performance, I tried copying a 9 Meg file to and from the
drive (which has an ext2 formatted disk)

                  HD-->SparQ SparQ-->HD
  regular 0:55 1:31
  w/PCI card 0:14 1:05

I think it was worth $40. And I think if I can get mode 2 to load again,
it would go even faster.
