What exactly are the problems that you encounter? The compile time options
that are necessary for printing (at least on i386) are:
CONFIG_PARPORT=m
CONFIG_PARPORT_PC=m
CONFIG_PRINTER=m
You can say y to any of these as long as all the ones in the list before it
are also y (so, CONFIG_PARPORT on its own, both parport and parport_pc, or
all three).
Did you read Documentation/Changes or Documentation/parport.txt?
