[PARPORT] How do i send data to the parallel port in Linux

I've to control a stepper motor through the parallel port of a SGI indy
machine(IRIX 5.3).
In IBM PC's the command outportb(port address, data) allows me to pass
the required data value to the port address.
In linux/unix how do i.
1. ascertain the port address of the parallel port
2. Send in the required data values to the port.
