[PARPORT] Error using HP 5GB drive

I have finally got my HP 5GB external tape drive installed and almost
working after having to upgrade my kernel etc. etc.

Anyone else have a working HP 5GB external ?

I have installed it using the loadable kernel modules (rather than compiling
it in the kernel).

Here is the messages I get when I load the modules (dmesg):

---
paride: version 1.04 installed
paride: epat registered as protocol 0
pt: pt version 1.04, major 96
pt0: Sharing parport0 at 0x378
pt0: epat 1.01, Shuttle EPAT chip c6 at 0x378, mode 5 (EPP-32), delay 1
pt0: HP COLORADO 5GBe, master, blocksize 512, 2458 MB
---

I then tested writing to it with: > tar -cvf /dev/pt0 /home

The drive ran for some time (I had some large files), and all seemed to work fine.

I then tried to verify the back up with: > tar --compare --verbose -f /dev/pt0

It went along fine for a bit, but then died. The following messages were in the dmesg: ---- pt0: identify completion: alt=0x51 stat=0x51 err=0x0 loop=0 phase=3 pt0: identify data done: alt=0x51 stat=0x51 err=0x0 loop=0 phase=3 pt0: Sense key: 3, ASC: 15, ASQ: 2 ----

Playing around with it some more, I issued a few commands, all of wich fail at some point. Here is the rest of the messages from dmesg:

---
pt0: HP COLORADO 5GBe, master, blocksize 512, 2458 MB
pt0: identify completion: alt=0x51 stat=0x51 err=0x0 loop=0 phase=3
pt0: identify data done: alt=0x51 stat=0x51 err=0x0 loop=0 phase=3

pt0: HP COLORADO 5GBe, master, blocksize 512, 2458 MB
pt0: write DSC timeout
pt0: Sense key: 0, ASC: 0, ASQ: 0
pt0: write filemark DSC timeout
pt0: Request sense before command: alt=0xc0 stat=0xc0 err=0x1c0 loop=600001

pt0: rewind before command: alt=0xc0 stat=0xc0 err=0x1c0 loop=600001
phase=192
pt0: Request sense before command: alt=0xc0 stat=0xc0 err=0x1c0 loop=600001
phase=192
---

I notice someone else on this list had a very similar problem a while back, but go no suggestions or help (according to the archive).

Does anyone now have any idea's? Anyone else have a working HP 5GB external ?

Thanks,
