    Hello,
thanks to James Mckenzie (who's mail-address does not seem to be
valid) I managed to activate the EPP-mode for my parport by changing
the port from 3bc to 378. But still the pt module won't work with a
    correct EPP-mode.
    /var/log/messages says:

    kernel: paride: version 1.04 installed
kernel: paride: epat registered as protocol 0
kernel: pt: pt version 1.04, major 96
    kernel: parport0: PC-style at 0x378, irq 7 [SPP,PS2,EPP]
    kernel: parport_probe: failed
kernel: parport0: no IEEE-1284 device present.
    kernel: pt0: 0x378 is parport0
    kernel: pt0: epat: port 0x378, mode 0, ccr 0, test=(0,0,0)
    kernel: pt0: epat: port 0x378, mode 1, ccr 40, test=(224,224,448)
    kernel: pt0: epat: port 0x378, mode 2, ccr 0, test=(0,0,0)

    kernel: pt0: epat: port 0x378, mode 4, ccr 0, test=(255,255,510)
kernel: pt0: epat: port 0x378, mode 5, ccr ff, test=(254,255,510)

    kernel: pt0: epat 1.01, Shuttle EPAT chip c6 at 0x378, mode 2 (8-bit),
    delay 1
    kernel: pt0: Reset (11) signature = 1 1 1 14 eb
kernel: pt0: HP COLORADO 8GBe, master, blocksize 512, 3954 MB

I want to set the mode to "5" and tried to load pt with "insmod pt
    drive0=0x378,0,0,5,0,-1 verbose=1" but this fails:

kernel: pt: pt version 1.04, major 96
    kernel: pt0: 0x378 is parport0
kernel: pt0: epat: port 0x378, mode 5, ccr aa, test=(242,256,511)
    kernel: pt0: Adapter not found
kernel: pt: No ATAPI tape drive detected

My brother can load pt without any options and gets the following
    messages:

    kernel: paride: version 1.04 installed
kernel: pt: pt version 1.04, major 96
kernel: paride: epat registered as protocol 0
    kernel: parport0: PC-style at 0x378 [SPP,PS2,EPP]
    kernel: parport_probe: failed
kernel: parport0: no IEEE-1284 device present.
    kernel: pt0: Sharing parport0 at 0x378
    kernel: pt0: epat 1.01, Shuttle EPAT chip c6 at 0x378, mode 5
    (EPP-32), delay 1
kernel: pt0: HP COLORADO 8GBe, master, blocksize 512, 3954 MB

It seems the mode "5" is much faster than the mode "2". Can anyone
tell me how to activate it and why it does not load by itself?
    Thanks for any advice.
    Phil
