Using the for-loop-ppa-wait patch actually makes the Zip drive
very slightly faster for me.

If it still fixes your problem, I'll send it to Alan/Linus. (If it
doesn't, we know that there are some places that call ppa_wait that
need a minimum 1us delay.)
