    I think PPSETMODE just forces the port mode to what you asked for. PPNEGOT
    actually negotiates with the peripheral at the other end for a mutually
    acceptable mode.

    It's more a case of what the peripheral attached to the port understands. You
    can negotiate for EPP even on a SPP port.
