    Hello again,
well I rebuilt the modules last night with the pd patch
(didn't rebuild the kernel, do I need to? I'm using 2.4.1)

The paride mods loaded and I did an fdisk on /dev/pda1 an created one
    big primary partition.

Next, I did mkfs.ext2 /dev/pda1. It started counting the inodes and
    locked at
around 37. (I would send a log dump, but it didn't get written in)

Evrything was pretty much done at that point. A message kept coming up
    about
TMO or something, along with DMA. (Sorry I can't be more specific right
    now)

This is about all I got before she hurled:

Mar 1 15:34:51 tmphost kernel: paride: version 1.05 installed
Mar 1 15:34:51 tmphost kernel: paride: epat registered as protocol 0
Mar 1 15:34:52 tmphost kernel: pd: pd version 1.06, major 45, cluster
    64, nice 0
Mar 1 15:34:52 tmphost kernel: pda: Sharing parport0 at 0x378
Mar 1 15:34:52 tmphost kernel: pda: epat 1.01, Shuttle EPAT chip c6 at
    0x378, mode 5 (EPP-32), delay 1
Mar 1 15:34:52 tmphost kernel: pda: Maxtor 32049H2, master, 39062500
blocks [19073M], (2431/255/63), fixed media, LBA mode
    Mar 1 15:34:52 tmphost kernel: pda: pda1
Mar 1 15:35:24 tmphost kernel: pda: Maxtor 32049H2, master, 39062500
blocks [19073M], (2431/255/63), fixed media, LBA mode
    Mar 1 15:35:24 tmphost kernel: pda: pda1
Mar 1 15:35:26 tmphost kernel: pda: Maxtor 32049H2, master, 39062500
blocks [19073M], (2431/255/63), fixed media, LBA mode
    Mar 1 15:35:26 tmphost kernel: pda: pda1

I tried some of the 'magic sys-req' keys, but couldn't get out of it,
    and rebooted.
Just got back in now, and tried an fsck.ext2 on /dev/pda1

here is the output (probably becauase it didn't get unmounted nicely)

    e2fsck 1.19, 13-Jul-2000 for EXT2 FS 0.5b, 95/08/09
/dev/pda1 was not cleanly unmounted, check forced.
Pass 1: Checking inodes, blocks, and sizes
Root inode is not a directory. Clear<y>?

At this point, I told it to clear the root directory, and it ran for
    about 5 minutes
    before I killed it.

    Any ideas anyone?

    Thanks again,
    Tobias
