This is literally going on my nerves and I don't know how to fix it...
if it has been asked recently I apologize but I searched the archives
without finding anything that looked relevant.

Hardware: One HP Colorado 20 GB parallel-port tape drive which also
passes through to an Epson printer. Standard cabling. No problem
there. Pentium II 350 MHz with 384 MB RAM.

Software: Red Hat 6.2 upgraded to Linux 2.2.18, lpd. Works fine and I
can print with no problem. GNU Tar.

_This setup has worked fine before._ However, for some reason I still
fail to see, this stopped working a while ago. When I try to backup,
the system seems to come to a full stop and I have to work furiously
to kill tar - I have no control over the console, and logging on over
the network is to no avail - I don't even get a password prompt from
SSH (telnet is disabled). According to the logs, the load average
raises to 27 or even higher in a second or two.

This is what I find in my logs:

    > ==> /var/log/messages <==
    > Oct 8 19:24:38 varg kernel: pt0: identify before command: alt=0xc0 stat=0xc0 err=0x1c0 loop=600001 phase=192
    > Oct 8 19:24:38 varg kernel: pt0: Request sense before command: alt=0xc0 stat=0xc0 err=0x1c0 loop=600001 phase=192

    > Oct 8 19:24:38 varg sendmail[28380]: rejecting connections on daemon MSA: load average: 27

    > Oct 8 19:27:17 varg kernel: pt0: write filemark before command: alt=0xc0 stat=0xc0 err=0x1c0 loop=600001 phase=192
    > Oct 8 19:27:17 varg kernel: pt0: Request sense before command: alt=0xc0 stat=0xc0 err=0x1c0 loop=600001 phase=192
    > Oct 8 19:27:17 varg kernel: pt0: rewind before command: alt=0xc0 stat=0xc0 err=0x1c0 loop=600001 phase=192
    > Oct 8 19:27:17 varg kernel: pt0: Request sense before command: alt=0xc0 stat=0xc0 err=0x1c0 loop=600001 phase=192

I have tried any means I can think of to correct this, but get
nowhere. It doesn't seem to make any difference whether I use a new or
already-used tape. The 'z' flag to tar makes no difference whatsoever.

Does anyone have any idea what might have gone wrong? I tried removing
the pt, epat and paride modules, and now paride and epat installs (in
that order), but pt fails claiming that autodetection failed with no
    more information than that.

And I could use a backup...
