[PARPORT] Parallel Port Control

I have tried the coffee HOWTO

ioperm( 0x378,3,1)
outb(0,0x378)

but the voltage on the data pins never changes.
/proc/ioports lists parport @ 0x378

I have parport & partport_pc modules loaded

Why is it not possible to write a byte to /dev/par0 | parport0 | lp0
with the same effect?
