    Hello Sieswerda:

    I think I know the answer. I wasted two days on the same issue when I
    recompiled my RedHat 7.3 kernel. You said, you tried to configure the
    kernel - may be this is what you need to do.

    1. Run kcontrol as root.

    2. Go to system menu and then to Linux Kernel configurator.

    3. Look for Character devices sub menu.

    4. Enable parallel printer support there.

    Apply changes, Compile and install it as a new linux option in lilo. It
    should work. Let me know if it fails.
