Have you tried using pg instead of ftape/zftape and 'mt -f /dev/pg0 status'
instead of the ftmt command? ftape and associated commands are for "floppy
tape" drives, ie. ones that connect to the floppy disk controller. (Hence
your floppy drive light coming on.)
