[PARPORT] Zip drive won't install

I got a zip drive about 9 months ago, but was never able
to get it to work. I thought the problem might have been
with hardware issues with my 486, but my new computer
won't work either. The parrallel port is at 0x278/IRQ5.
I am running 2.0.32 (Debian 1.3). When I try to load a
module without a disk, I get an error. If I load it with
a preformated dos zip drive, the load hangs. If at this
point I try to access sda4 the system locks up. Heres the
output of my attempts to load the module:

blunier# insmod ppa ppa_base=0x278 ppa_nybble=1
scsi0 : PPA driver version 0.26 using 4-bit mode on port 0x278.
scsi : 1 host.
Vendor: IOMEGA Model: ZIP 100 Rev: D.09
Type: Direct-Access ANSI SCSI revision: 02
Detected scsi removable disk sda at scsi0, channel 0, id 6, lun 0
sda : READ CAPACITY failed.
sda : status = 0, message = 00, host = 0, driver = 28
sda : extended sense code = 2
sda : block size assumed to be 512 bytes, disk size 1GB.
 sda:scsidisk I/O error: dev 08:00, sector 0, absolute sector 0
 unable to read partition table
blunier# rmmod ppa
scsi : 0 hosts.

<now I insert a dos formated zip disk in the drive>

blunier# insmod ppa ppa_base=0x278 ppa_nybble=1
scsi1 : PPA driver version 0.26 using 4-bit mode on port 0x278.
scsi : 1 host.
Vendor: IOMEGA Model: ZIP 100 Rev: D.09
Type: Direct-Access ANSI SCSI revision: 02
Detected scsi removable disk sda at scsi1, channel 0, id 6, lun 0

This command does not return.

What should I try next?
Thanks
