[PARPORT] waiting for lp to become ready (offline ?)

Help, no longer prints from linux (though it WILL print from a dos boot
floppy). It has been like this for 3 days now, I probably changed
something when I was trying to fix X11R6 (which disappeared after I
tweaked AnotherStep).

I even backed up all data, reinstalled redhat 5.2 as a new install (no, I
did not wipe my harddrive first). Still lp (and my X window managers) does
not work.

I even rolled a new kernel (the brand spankin' new v2.2.1) with lp first
as a module, then with lp hardcoded in. Still no luck.

It is polling every 30 seconds?? And I'm currently NOT using lp
as a module (it is hard coded), so why the reference to lp.0.

Yes, I did make mrproper before I made menuconfig, depend, vmlinux,
modules, and modules_install.

TIA
