That's because /dev/pg0 is not a block device. :-)

If you want to access it as an ISO CD-ROM, use the pcd driver
and and the iso9660 file system.

If you want to burn a CD on it, use pg and cdrecord.

PROBABLY, you are looking for a Linux implementation of UDF (like
Adaptec's DirectCD). There isn't one, as far as I'm aware.
