the mesg lp0:out of paper comes from drivers/char/lp.c.
also in 2.2.x, the lp.c has been changed to use the parport abstraction
layer.
so going thru the code in drivers/char/lp* + drivers/block/paride may give
some hints(esp. the coments).
i have not used any printers with 2.2.x and hence beyond this i have no
idea.
