It does put a major load on the system, but most likely you have your
parallel port misconfigured. Make sure it is set to EPP mode in the
BIOS settings.

And, next time, please follow the instructions and include the
kernel log messages produced when you load the driver with verbose=1.

You need to "renice" the driver, not the process. Read the documentation.
