Hmm....one of us is confused. The 5100C contains an EPST parallel-scsi
adapter...it's a scsi scanner internally with the adapter and a parallel port
tacked on. to use it: plug it into a parallel port on your machine and do:

            modprobe -r lp
            modprobe parport_pc
            modprobe epst

there should be a delay and maybe a clunk or two from the scanner
accompanied by 100% processor usage for a few seconds...then you should see
epst's messages show up in dmesg...

            you can add:

            modprobe lp

to the end if you have a printer chained to the scanner...
