ok, so the problem is with the epst module.
Joshua Jore mentioned the possibility that the driver is outdated and
support for the HP5300C epst chip hasn't been written yet.
Just in case im doing something wrong and there is support for the chip, I
thought i'd post some more debugging info.
I was able to generate more debugging info, following Eric Lamarque's
advice:
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
loading the module:
[root@oort log]# insmod epst verbose=4
Using /lib/modules/2.4.2-2/kernel/drivers/scsi/epst.o
/lib/modules/2.4.2-2/kernel/drivers/scsi/epst.o: init_module: No such device
Hint: insmod errors can be caused by incorrect module parameters, including
invalid IO or IRQ parameters
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
resulting /var/log/messages:
Jul 2 19:09:46 oort kernel: epst.0: 0x378 is parport0
Jul 2 19:09:46 oort kernel: epst.0: version code reads: 0xc7
Jul 2 19:09:46 oort kernel: epst.0: port 0x378 mode 0 test failed (1,-1,0)
Jul 2 19:09:46 oort kernel: epst.0: version code reads: 0x47
Jul 2 19:09:46 oort kernel: epst.0: port 0x378 mode 1 test failed (1,-1,0)
Jul 2 19:09:46 oort kernel: epst.0: version code reads: 0xc7
Jul 2 19:09:46 oort kernel: epst.0: port 0x378 mode 2 test failed (1,-1,0)

You seem to be more lucly than me, here's my dmesg with the same
procedure:
parport0: PC-style at 0x378 [SPP]
parport1: PC-style at 0x278 [SPP,PS2,EPP]
parport0: no IEEE-1284 device present.
parport1: no IEEE-1284 device present.
my scanner is on parport1

Here, you must try: > insmod ppscsi

scsi : 0 hosts.
In my case, the parallel port returns the same values on the
two physical parallel port, even if there is device plug on it.
If you've done some other experience with your scanner...
