My backpack CD drive no longer works with new versions of the linux
kernel -- I've tried 2.4.2 and 2.4.7. The last kernel version I know to
work was 2.4.0-test10.
I've tested the drive on a windows machine and the parallel port by
printing.
When I try to load the pcd module, it says that "Autoprobe failed." The
relevant messages from dmesg are:

I recall that I got the "unsupported pword size" message under -test10
as well, but the drive worked then.
This is more a heads-up than anything else, I guess; I go on vacation
friday, and won't need the machine anytime soon after that. This bug report
is probably only useful if the problem is immediately obvious.
