What about 'modprobe parport_pc'? I can't really explain the
behaviour you are seeing, other than putting it down to a kernel bug
that was fixed around 2.4.3/2.4.4 time that meant that accessing
/dev/parport0 failed to trigger a load of the parport lowlevel port
driver.
