    Is your kernel configured for IEEE1284 modes
    (CONFIG_PARPORT_1284)? What parport-related messages
    do you get? (Specifically something like:

    parport0: PC-style at 0x378 [PCSPP,TRISTATE,EPP]

    is what you would expect to see if EPP is being
    detected.)
