Oops, I didn't consider devices which don't even speak compatibility mode. I
guess they are fixed forever in ECP mode, so no negotiation is needed, and
reading should work straight away. If it doesn't then I've failed to consider
the effect of such a negotiation-free device on the ECP forward/reverse state
(in the ECPSWE code at least)...
