Under MS-Windows, do you notice *any* differences? Is the CD-RW slower?
Does the access light blink more often? Are there fits and starts when
transfering files?

This is strange....

I have known of at least two cases where MS-Windows failed to notice
'broken' hardware and continued as if nothing was wrong. In *both*
cases, Linux noticed the 'broken' hardware and refused to work with it.
It *is* possible that the CD-RW is in fact flacking out and the
MS-Windows is not noticing that there are problems. It is possible that
your CD-RW drive has developed a *marginal* problem. Could be simply
that the laser head is 'dirty' or something like that. MS-Windows is
somehow not dealing with the errors as 'fatal', where Linux is.
It is also possible that there really is something non-standard with the
CD-RW's hardware interface that requires some sort of 'special'
(non-standard) driver.
