This all sounds suspiciously like a bad cable. It's not a protocol or
driver issue, I don't think. You've also complained before about lousy
performance, IIRC. The two are probably related. Do you have a
switch box in the circuit ? Are you using the cable that came with the
SparQ ? Do you see any of these effects when you use it under DOS/Win
(if you do) ? Do you have a printer chained off the SparQ ? These are
_not_ normal problems with a properly configured SparQ and PARIDE.

It would be a good habit to load pd with the verbose option so I can
see the difference in the probe reports between the times it works in
8 bit mode and when it uses EPP.
