This sounds like your /etc/printcap is trying to use /dev/lp1. As you note,
/dev/lp0 is the right thing to be using.
Incidentally, you shouldn't expect 'cat /dev/lp0' to do anything
spectactular. I/O error (as opposed to no such device) just means that the
attached device refused to enter a reverse data mode (where the printer
starts talking back).
