As suggested, I changed my parport setting from ECP to EPP in the cmos
setup, then loaded the modules.
# insmod paride
paride: version 1.04 installed
# insmod epat
paride: epat registered as protocol 0

When trying to force mode 2, delay 0.....
# insmod pg drive0=0x378,0,0,2,1,0 verbose=1
pg: pg version 1.02, major 97
pg0: epat: port 0x378, mode 2, ccr ff, test=(255,255,510)
pg0: Adapter not found
pg: No ATAPI device detected
/lib/modules/2.2.5-15/misc/pg.o: init_module: Device or resource busy

Module loads without drive args....
# insmod pg verbose=1
pg: pg version 1.02, major 97
parport0: PC-style at 0x3bc [SPP]
parport0: no IEEE-1284 device present.
pg0: 0x3bc is parport0
pg0: epat: port 0x3bc, mode 0, ccr 0, test=(255,0,0)
pg0: epat: port 0x3bc, mode 1, ccr 0, test=(255,0,0)
pg0: epat: port 0x3bc, mode 2, ccr 2d, test=(255,255,510)
pg0: Sharing parport0 at 0x3bc
pg0: epat 1.01, Shuttle EPAT chip c6 at 0x3bc, mode 1 (5/3), delay 1
pg0: Reset (1001) signature = ff ff ff ff ff (incorrect)
pg0: Reset (204) signature = 1 1 1 14 eb
pg0: HP CD-Writer+ 7100, slave

Possible solutions appreciated.
