...well, I only made up my mind base on the label "autodetect", but anyway...

Up to now the ftape package seems to have problems with interacting
with parport / parport_pc, so I am forced to leave parport / parport_pc
removable from the kernel. This has already been asked in linux-tape,
but nobody has managed to use ftape working together with parport - so far.

Here it is:

Right after rebooting:

mount /dev/sda4

        parport0: PC-style at 0x378, irq 7 [SPP,ECP,ECPEPP,ECPPS2]
ppa: Version 2.05 (for Linux 2.2.x)

ppa: Communication established with ID 6 using EPP

        scsi : 2 hosts.

Detected scsi removable disk sda at scsi1, channel 0, id 6, lun 0
        SCSI device sda: hdwr sector= 512 bytes. Sectors= 196608 [96 MB] [0.1 GB]
        sda: Write Protect is off
         sda: sda4

ls -al /zip4
ftmt -f /dev/qft0 status

        (...)

mount /dev/sda4
mount: /dev/sda4 is not a valid block device

Absolutely no additional message in dmesg (/var/log/messages)

[ playing around in /etc/conf.modules,
but without any success and any message in dmesg]

modprobe ppa

        bpck module successfully unloaded.
        [057] zftape-init.c (cleanup_module) - successful.
        zftape successfully unloaded.
        ftape: unloaded.
        parport0: PC-style at 0x378, irq 7 [SPP,ECP,ECPEPP,ECPPS2]
ppa: Version 2.05 (for Linux 2.2.x)
ppa: Found device at ID 6, Attempting to use EPP

        sda: Write Protect is off
         sda: sda4

mount /dev/sda4
ls -al /zip4
and so on...

Results: Except for immediately after having rebooted an automatic
loading of the module ppa keeps not possible, whereas a manual
modprobe ppa does work. Workaround: sd_mod to be a module...
But this is not really satisfactory if you think of normal users
who should be able to mount /dev/sda4 (users in /etc/fstab),
because modprobe is reserved for root.

Cheers, Juergen.
