You could try enabling 'IEEE 1284 status readback', and then see if 'cat
/dev/lp0' makes any difference to whether or not you are able to print.

The idea is that it will try to negotiate to reverse nibble mode (your
printer will probably reject that), but then it will terminate again, and
hopefully restore normality.

The result of that test would be an interesting clue.
