    No, setting the parallel port to ECP (SPP detected) in the bios, the
    same problems remain.

    However, when resettting to EPP mode, I noticed I used EPP 1.7. When I
    switched to EPP 1.9, the problems also remained, but the system seemed
    'harder to crash'.

    It crashed though, and here are a few of the messages that were
    apparently recorded to syslog (EPP 1.7 and ECP didn't record anything):
