Negotiation isn't affected by the mode you have set in the BIOS -- in fact,
you can negotiate to EPP even with a SPP port, you just won't be able to
transfer any data afterwards. You can enable some debugging at compile time
in parport/ieee1284.c that should reveal why the handshake is failing.
