I'm not aware of exactly this problem, but it does sound similar to the known
problems with the PARIDE drivers on SMP systems. I have finally solved that
one (I believe) and will be submitting the patches shortly.

Is this an old computer with no EPP ? If so, are you sure it locks up, or
is it just being slow ? Are you low on memory on this machine ?
