Argh. My quality control department (me) is not on the ball :-(
That value doesn't matter. But, it should defined to 4 in paride.h.
One of two mistakes that you are tripping over.

You won't be too successful actually writing CDs with this thing if
you are stuck in mode 2. Try adjusting your CMOS settings to enable
EPP mode (but avoid ECP modes at all costs).

This is an editing bug in the pg.c source - locate the function
pg_reset and change (temporarily) PG_TMO to 1000. That should fix it.
The drive is not spinning up in the time allowed.
